In 1976, Dr. Vijay Prakesh and fellow social workers formed a group named SEWA, inspired by Gandhian principles of rural development. The group began working with underprivileged and marginalized communities through village-level initiatives focused on education, healthcare and social awareness. Recognizing the need to formalize these efforts, the group later moved towards registering the organization.

Gram Vikas Sewa Sansthan (GVSS) was formally registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 on 21 October 1978 (Registration No. 2977) and established its office in Jagdishpur, Amethi. Since then, GVSS has expanded its work across education, skill development, women’s empowerment, health and nutrition, livelihoods, and environmental and climate awareness, working alongside communities and partners.
